Announcing The GM 100,000-Mile Warranty – "The Best Coverage in America"

Today, we are announcing a new warranty that extends all eight GM brands to 100,000 miles/five years, beginning with the entire 2007 model year lineup. The new GM 100,000 Mile Warranty, in combination with 100,000 miles/5 years of roadside assistance and courtesy transportation is the best coverage in America and represents an unprecedented level of value and peace of mind for General Motors car and light duty truck buyers.

The GM 100,000 Mile Warranty also features no deductibles and is fully transferable. In addition we are providing 100,000/5 year 24/7 roadside assistance and free courtesy transportation while a vehicle is being serviced for a powertrain-related issue. The GM 100,000 mile Warranty will be provided on all 2007 model light duty vehicles, including those previously purchased. Owners of previously purchased 2007 light duty models will be notified via U.S. Mail and will receive an updated warranty booklet insert for their glove box materials in late September.

For non-powertrain components, GM's Bumper-to-Bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty remains in effect: four years/50,000 miles for Buick, Cadillac, HUMMER and Saab vehicles; and three years/36,000 miles for Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac and Saturn vehicles.

All divisional websites were updated this afternoon and we have created a dedicated website – www.gm.com/warranty .

Customer Frequently Asked Questions:

Why has GM elected to make this change?

This move is intended to provide our owners with an unprecedented level of value, confidence, and protection. As a result, GM is elevating the total vehicle ownership experience with 100,000 miles/5 years (whichever comes first) of coverage with a powertrain limited warranty, 24/7 roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.  Altogether it’s the best, most comprehensive new vehicle owner coverage in the industry.

What is the difference between the expanded powertrain coverage and my original warranty coverage?

Your bumper to bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty remains in effect; four years/50,000 miles (whichever comes first) for Buick, Cadillac, HUMMER and Saab: and three years/36,000 miles (whichever comes first) for Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac, and Saturn.

However, for 2007 GM light duty vehicles the powertrain New Vehicle Limited Warranty continues for 100,000 miles or 5 years (whichever occurs first) from the original delivery date.  In general, the powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, transfer case and axle assemblies.

See a GM dealer for details of these warranties.

What components are covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles?

In general, the powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, transfer case and axle assemblies on light duty vehicles as indicated below.

Engine

Cylinder head, block, timing gears, timing chain, timing cover, oil pump/oil pump housing, OHC carriers, valve covers, oil pan, seals, gaskets, turbocharger, supercharger and all internal lubricated parts as well as manifolds, flywheel, water pump, harmonic balancer and engine mount,.  Timing belts are covered until the first scheduled maintenance interval.

Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case

Case, all internal lubricated parts, torque converter, transfer case, transmission/transaxle mounts, seals, and gaskets.

Drive Systems

Final drive housing, all internal lubricated parts, axle shafts and bearings, constant velocity joints and boots, axle housing, propeller shafts, universal joints, wheel bearings, locking hubs, front differential actuator, supports, front and rear hub bearings, seals and gaskets.

I purchased a 2007 GM vehicle in March.  Is my new vehicle eligible?

Yes. If you already purchased a 2007 GM light duty vehicle, your new vehicle is automatically covered under our new 100,000-Mile/5-year powertrain limited warranty at no extra cost.  You will receive an updated warranty booklet insert for your glove box literature in late September via US mail.

I have a 2006 GM product with the exact same vehicle/powertrain as the 2007. Why isn’t my vehicle eligible?

Unfortunately, the new extended powertrain limited warranty is available on 2007 model year light-duty models only.  However, you may want to contact your GM dealer to discuss your ability to purchase one of the many GM Protection Plan products available for your GM vehicle, which can be tailored to meet your needs.

I noticed in your recent announcement that the powertrain warranty on my new Tahoe is transferable at no charge.  How does a customer transfer the warranty?

There is no transfer required.  Regardless of ownership, the powertrain limited warranty stays with your 2007 GM light duty vehicle.  In addition, regardless of owner, you also receive the many benefits of our 24/7 Roadside Assistance service and courtesy transportation for 100,000 miles or 5 years (whichever comes first).

My 2007 Chevrolet Silverado has a DURAMAX Diesel Engine. How does this announcement affect my Duramax diesel powertrain warranty?

You are no longer required to pay the $100 deductible previously associated with your DURAMAX Engine powertrain limited warranty.

Are light duty vehicles sold to “fleets” (for business use), included in the new coverage?

Yes, with the exception of certain vehicles that are upfitted or created for special applications, such as limousine, hearse, and livery vehicles, which have warranties specific to these applications.

GM sells several types of light duty chassis for use in applications such as ambulances, recreational vehicles, and buses; are these vehicles included?

Yes.  But it is important to note that GM warrants the chassis, while the manufacturers who build on the chassis, provide separate warranties of their own for their components.

Are medium duty trucks included in the new program?

No. This powertrain warranty enhancement is only available on GM light duty vehicles.  GM Medium Duty trucks have comprehensive warranty, and roadside assistance and courtesy transportation coverage, but are not included in this powertrain enhancement.

I purchased a GM Protection Plan service contract prior to the announcement of the GM powertrain coverage and want my money back. How do I apply for reimbursement?

The GM Protection Plan Team is in the process of determining the impact of the GM extension of the Powertrain warranty on your GMPP contract.  They will contact all affected customers in the next 4-6 weeks.  In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your selling dealership or call the GM Protection Plan Customer Service Center at 1-800-631-5590.

Do I have to take my vehicle to a GM dealer for maintenance to maintain my extended powertrain eligibility?

GM dealers have the specialized training and GM genuine parts and accessories to ensure your vehicle is repaired and maintained properly.  Although you are not required to have your vehicle maintained at a GM dealership, we highly recommend that you do.  In addition, we encourage you to keep detailed records and receipts of your maintenance history.  Of course, warranty repairs must be performed at an authorized GM dealership.

Does the required maintenance of my vehicle change as a result of this new powertrain limited warranty?

As a vehicle owner, you are responsible for the performance of the scheduled maintenance listed in your Owners Manual throughout the warranty period.  Your Owner’s Manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule that you should follow for your specific vehicle and driving habits.  In addition, we strongly encourage you to keep detailed records and receipts of your maintenance history.

What does roadside assistance cover?

Roadside Assistance provides you with the safety and security of emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  These services include towing, fuel delivery, lock out service, flat tire change and jump-start.

For Cadillac and Hummer only – In certain instances, a service technician will come directly to you by being dispatched to perform services directly on site.

See your Owner’s Manual for additional details.

Can I purchase this extra powertrain coverage for my 2006 (and prior) vehicle?

You may be eligible to purchase one of the many GM Protection Plan products available for your GM vehicle, which can be tailored to meet your needs. Please contact your selling dealership for details on the various GM Protection Plan programs.
